“Rione Monti”: an historical outline
The “Residenza Maritti” is in the historical centre of Rome, in the heart of the most typical quarter where traces of the Roman, Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods can be found, in a richness of styles which covers over 2500 years of history.
Today the “Rione Monti” has narrow streets, often winding uphill between palaces from different times with workshops, entertainment clubs, old taverns and art galleries: it is the ancient Roman Subura, now called Suburra (old area under the city).
You feel as if you were living in those ancient times when you go down to “piazza della Suburra” from the stairs in via Cavour (near Cavour station, underground “B” line), or walking up the stairs of the “Salita Borgia” in San Pietro in Vincoli, or strolling along via Nazionale through via dei Serpenti or via del Boschetto.
In via della Madonna dei Monti, a street lined with buildings from the Middle Age as well as from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, you can see the remains of the Argiletum, the Roman street which crossed the Northern part of the Suburra.
